Jessica Perez Gokelaere
Jessica Perez Gokelaere is a French-Colombian sound artist and designer, holding a degree in Contemporary Art and Contemporary Design from the École Supérieure d’Art et Design de Saint-Étienne (ESADSE), France. She is currently studying electroacoustic music composition with Diego Losa at the Conservatoire Massenet in Saint-Étienne, France. Her practice explores sound through a transdisciplinary approach combining sound composition, field recording, experimental instrument making and musical practice.
She grew up in a rich musical environment, open to a variety of instrumental practices shaped by the cultural influences of the different places she has lived: the Eastern Llanos of Colombia, a region of vast expanses of land and seasonally flooded savannas stretching from the Orinoco River to the Eastern Andes mountain range, as well as the major cities of Bogotá and Paris, where she also studied classical music at the conservatoire.
She explores sound as a material, shaping sonic textures and creating soundscapes that invite audiences to discover different ways of listening and reveal subtle, imperceptible sounds that inhabit the limits of our perception. Through various sound-based activations, she seeks to foster active listening by exploring the boundary between real and symbolic space.
Alongside her individual practice, she works with Natacha Pérez Gokelaere and Aurélie Le Nevé as part of an interdisciplinary collective developing spatial interventions at the intersection of design, architecture and urban planning. Their projects invite people to experience places while questioning our relationship with them. They propose a sensitive, immersive and reflective approach to places and to the connections between society and the environment.
